Dubai Information
  General Information
Dubai is the second largest emirate in the U.A.E. Its total area is around 1000 square miles.
The city of Dubai is divided by the famous Dubai creek or Khor. This natural harbour, and Dubai's strategic location on the international trading map has made it one of the world's leading trading and commercial centers.
The Ruler of Dubai, H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, succeeded his father in 1990.
His father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum was one of the founding fathers of the UAE together with H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan and was the Vice-President and Prime Minister until his death in 1990.
Now, Sheikh Maktoum has taken the mantle of the above positions.
Information on Dubai
The Maktoum family is also a part of the Baniyas tribe who first settled in Abu Dhabi but then later took control of Dubai in 1833. Dubai's growth can be traced back to the early years of the century when the grandfather of H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum persuaded the British shipping line plying between Britain and India, to make Dubai their main port of call in the 1940s.
To further consolidate its position as a major port, H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum took an active interest in the development of Dubai, he established a Police Force, a customs service and developed trade connections with India.
Soon, in the 1960's, with the discovery of oil, money started to pour in and Dubai's prominence and prosperity increased. But aware of the risks of oil-dependency, Sheikh Rashid actively promoted new industrial ventures. The Aluminium and Cement factory are the result of this endeavour.
The Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone - the fifth largest in the world within a short span of ten years, has attracted over 900 international companies that include global giants - a few of these are General Motors, AEG, Aiwa, BP, Ciba, Geigy, Daewoo and Heinz.
Dubai's attractiveness not only lies in its trade. Like the rest of the U.A.E., it has also been actively promoted as a tourist destination. A few of its notable achievements are :

 Neighborhoods
- Along Dubai Creek
Nowhere are Dubai's contrasts more apparent than along the creek in Deira. Striking glass-and-marble hotels and businesspeople in Armani suits share the space with local traders and their ancient wooden dhows. The wharfs and dhows are piled high with spices, porcelain, reams of fabric, and exotic fruits and vegetables. It's a great spot for people watching, both day and night. If you want to buy something from the traders, be prepared for some serious bargaining. Along Khor Dubai (near Hotel Inter-Continental), Deira.
- Bastakiya Quarter
Be sure to take a walk through the streets of this conservation area -- the traditional architecture gives it a distinctly Arabian feel. Check out the wind towers, tall structures attached to houses which catch cool breezes -- a low-tech form of air-conditioning. The quarter is just east of the Dubai Museum and the Diwan in Bur Dubai.
 Attractions
Before you stretch out on the beach or head into the desert, take time to tour the city sights. Start with the Bastakiya Quarter, one of the few areas where you'll see older, traditional buildings. Several nearby museums will help you put the sights into context. The Dubai Museum, housed in an old fort, presents the city's history in a colorful way. The Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum House is another history and culture museum worth visiting. To better understand the city's connection to the sea, stop by the Dubai Heritage and Diving Village.
The Dubai skyline reveals the city's enthusiasm for architecture. Currently claiming the title of tallest building in the city are the twin triangular Emirates Towers. The Burj al-Arab hotel tower, in the shape of a large sail and situated on an island, is also a remarkable sight. Dubai's many mosques are primarily for worshippers, rather than sightseers. Nevertheless, you should definitely have a look at the Jumeirah Mosque, particularly when it's lit up at night.
Some of Dubai's most diverse sights are along Khor Dubai, the broad, winding creek. Merchants load and unload old dhows (traditional boats), which are lined up along the wharves, and Armani-clad businesspeople pass by, conducting business on cell phones. Another way to enjoy the sights along the creek is to take an abra (water taxi).
Once you're acquainted with the city, a trip into the desert is a must. Several local tour operators offer excursions, ranging from camel rides to sand skiing to dune-buggy trips. If you have the time, and the inclination, we recommend an overnight camping trip.
 Climate

Dubai has a subtropical, arid climate, with lots of sunshine and blue skies for most of the year. Rainfall is infrequent -- mostly during the winter months -- but flash floods can occur. Temperatures range from a low of about 50 F/10 C to a high of 118 F/48 C. The best time to visit Dubai is during the winter months, November-March. Summers are hot and humid.
